Important: Confirm that the copier supports SMB over IPv6. Some older devices support IPv6 printing but not IPv6 scan-to-folder.
1. Find the Windows IPv6 address
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run
ipconfig. - Locate the active Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter.
- Record its IPv6 link-local address beginning with
fe80::. - Record the interface number after the percent sign.
2. Verify communication
Test the copier’s address from Windows. A link-local test may require the interface number:
ping fe80::1234:5678:abcd:ef01%12
Replace the example address and interface number with the values from your network.
3. Configure the copier destination
- Protocol: SMB
- Port: 445
- Server: Windows IPv6 address or supported hostname
- Share: The shared folder name
- Username: COMPUTERNAME\scanuser
- Password: The scan account password
4. Understand the scope identifier
The percentage value, such as %12, identifies the Windows network adapter. Many copier address books cannot accept this value. If the copier rejects the address, use a hostname, stable IPv4 address, or routable IPv6 address instead.
Common failures
- Timeout: Verify that both devices are on the same network and VLAN.
- Authentication failure: Recheck the account name, password and permissions.
- Address rejected: The copier may not support a link-local scope identifier.
- Stopped after a network change: Confirm that the active adapter or address did not change.
- IPv6 ping works but scanning fails: Confirm SMB-over-IPv6 support and TCP port 445.
When to use IPv4 instead
Use a reserved IPv4 address when the copier has limited IPv6 SMB support, the destination is located across a router, or the device cannot store the required IPv6 scope information.
Technician checklist
- Confirm the firmware version.
- Test IPv6 communication in both directions.
- Verify TCP port 445.
- Check both Share and Security permissions.
- Test with a one-page black-and-white PDF.
- Document the final server address and username format.
